I took some time last night to watch the Oprah's special school show "Building of a Dream". I have to say I cried all the way through. I love the way these girls came from horrible living conditions and in the midst of that can still find purpose. They strived so hard to get in to this school. They were confident and as Oprah said had "it". I loved it. I loved the girls' desire to learn and the way they craved change. Not only change of appearance or friends like girls this age normally crave but they craved change that would have a long term effect on their lives and the lives of their family. They desired purpose.
Oprah often brought up how this was her purpose. She was often asked why she didn't have kids and she was unable to answer. Right now she says she can answer that question. She has been able to "adopt" all these girls and provide for them an amazing school. A school that will take the brightest kids in the most horrible circumstances and give them a chance to strive and make a difference in the lives they will one day touch.
My sister Andee called when I was watching this to ask about what to put in a salad she was making for dinner. Most of you will laugh but between me and her - I am the cook! Which is not much to claim! Any way, I told her I was watching this and asked her if she saw it. She said yes and it made her frustrated because she wanted to know "what is my purpose?" "What am I doing to make an impact or a difference in the world?" She is the mother of two under 3 years old and is consumed with the daily chores and felt sad that she could not focus on things like this.
It got me to thinking. We can not all be Oprah, just like we claim on our website. And we have to remember too that Oprah has found her "purpose" at the age of 51 (or so, is she older now?). Anyway - I know it does not feel like much and we do not have the ability to make a school or even send money to school. But we do have purpose and I tend to think that one we might have been given (among many others) is to complete the work God has given us to do (John 17:4). He has asked us to be Godly moms, Godly wives and Godly women. He is asking a lot and we can't do it without his help. We have a purpose of providing for our families a safe, fun, and relaxing place. We can do it! And we do not need a TV show to give us that purpose or money. We just need to train our brains to think that what we are doing is important. It is important that when my daughter wakes up that I give her a hug and it is important that when my husband comes home I have a smile and hug for him regardless of their reaction to me. Our projects and pursuits will never matter as much as they will when we are loving and caring for those around us. Take a look at what god has given you already and love it and make that your purpose - to complete the work God has given you to do.
So check back often on this blog of our website to hear our normal daily chores, battles and victories. We hope they provide some encouragement and reminders that you have been chosen by and hired by God to be a mom - not a movie star, just a mom and it is a job of great prestige and honor! Press on!!!!
Send us some of your stories too - we would love to post them! We love to laugh not only at ourselves but other's stories too!
