Getting Organized Room by Room: Shoes!
The Closet should not be a black hole that sucks thing in never to be found again, nor should it be a space in your house upon leaving one might need a tetanus shot. Believe it or not, closets can be a wonderfully practical, useful and functional places in your home. But so much of the time they turn into an extension of the family junk drawer. In the next few weeks we are going to look into closets and begin turning them into positive spaces in our homes. Ready?
School is still 5 – 7 weeks away, so this is a opportune time to clear out the clutter and get them ready for the upcoming school year. Pick a single closet to work on at a time…don’t over do it…that will only cause burn out followed by incompletion. When you pick a closet…divide it into tasks, to help move towards completion instead of quitting…. choose one shelf a day or even a week or spend 15 minutes in the closet a day etc. Before you know it you will have spaces that work for you and serve your home better. Here are some tips for better closets...BUT…Remember to use these tips only as they fit your closet and your lifestyle and you budget!
This week – shoes – No more shoe mountains – you know...that mountain of shoes that grows on the floor of your closet! Reestablish order by getting them off the floor…there are many ways to do this.
1. If you have enough room – built in cubbies (this cost’s money and demands a bigger closet)
2. Try sloped shelves with a narrow lip that holds shoes in place (also demands space and money)
3. Store shoes in see-through shoebox or original shoebox to save money – for the original shoe box – stick a digital picture of the shoes on the box.
4. You could try a shoe rack over the closet door – total space saver.
5. If you must use the floor, then put shoes on floor shoe racks under hanging clothes.
6. Purge your shoes – remove all shoes that are space suckers – these are shoes that you never wear…shoes that you have not worn in years or even the past year…and shoes that you have worn out or that you have ten others just like. Purge, purge, purge…you will find this your biggest organizational and space saving tool!
