News Recap for Week of Aug 20th

*
INTERNATIONALLY:
Osama bin Laden is said to be alive and well according to US-based analysts monitoring extremist publications. Hmmmm - wonder why he is so quiet? And wonder where he is????
Rumors are flying around Florida that Fidel's health is in jeopardy. There are reports on setbacks in his health but no official news that death is nearing. His involvement in Cuban affairs is stated as "he is being informed and consulted constantly". Well that to me says - hey buddy here is what is going on - it doesn't say anything about whether he really hears or responds. I wonder what life would be like if Fidel were gone. Very interesting. He is 81.
A young woman who was 25 weeks in to her pregnancy went in to labor on an airplane and the crew, with no doctor on board, managed to deliver the baby and the baby has defied all odds and actually is doing ok. He was born at 1lb and could not breath so they did mouth to mouth until the plane landed and then he was rushed to the hospital. Can you believe that???? I mean - I hope mom and dad see this miracle baby may be on this earth for some amazing reason! I mean all our babies are here on earth to make God famous but what a dramatic entry - maybe he will be a actor. Happy
See more...

HOLLYWOOD:
A reality show about 40 kids spending 40 days by themselves with no adults is set to premiere on CBS on Sept 19. Lots of accidents happened like kitchen accidents and bleach drinking. So, CBS may be in violation of child labor laws. It is called Kid Nation. I am not sure that is a great show to watch - hmmmm..... but who knows may make your kids appreciate you more. Happy
Cate Blanchett is playing Bob Dylan - go figure that one.
Nicole Richie was released from jail Thursday after serving 82 minutes of a four day sentence for driving under the influence of drugs. That to me is more like a time out. She is pregnant and says her life is turned around. I sure hope so - for the child's sake.

*
POLITICALLY
Oprah Winfrey is giving a celebrity-packed fundraising party for Democratic senator Obama at her $64 million southern California estate. Oprah did tell Larry King though that "My value to him, my support of him is probably worth more than any other check that I could write." I promise you Oprah, he won't mind the check. It seems that cameras are a no no at this bash. It is $2,300 a head. I will give anyone a meal and some relaxing time at my house with no political agenda for 2,300 a head. Happy
It seems that Mrs. Obama has criticized Hillary saying that if you can't run your own home, then you can't run the White House. She is receiving a lot of flack and now is denying saying it. Come one buck up Mrs. Obama - show you are strong. Happy

* OTHER:
Midwest is getting a ton of rain and is flooding. It is pretty bad and all caused, I think because of tropical storm Erin. So... it can affect folks in land too - those tropical storms are a mess.
Ten million-year-old fossils discovered in Ethiopia show that humans and apes probably split six or seven million years earlier than widely thought according to a landmark study released Wednesday. We all know that we came from God but good to know what "science" is trying to prove. Sometimes I wonder if men came from apes when they do certain things but God reminds me often that he made them all. Especially my sweet husband. Happy

That is it for this week. Have a great weekend.

News Recap for Week of July 23rd

*
INTERNATIONALLY:
The Tour de France is going on right now - I am not sure how long it lasts - all month? Any way the leader has been removed because his team made some mistakes. Got to hate that - you do so well and then your team lets you down.
Devastating floods are happening in England.

*
HOLLYWOOD:
I guess these two stories are considered "Hollywood" - so here goes. For those of you who don't know David Beckham is now playing soccer here in the US - he was a huge player in England and is now playing here. Soccer fans think this will make the sport huge. He played for the first time last weekend and did it for show really - for 15 minutes or so. He has a hurt ankle. I wonder if pay changes when you are hurt. Well he and Posh, his wife, had a party for family and friends to celebrate. Wouldn't it be nice to work for 15 min - be rich - and pay for everyone's dinner?
Harry Potter's last book came out this weekend too. Lots of folks stood in line - I think it sold 8 mil in the first 24 hours - or first hour - not sure. But either way - HUGE. I am reading it right now and I am so impressed. It is just great story telling. I am sad for anyone who has not had a chance to enjoy it. Give it a try -
In the next season of 24 the new president is supposed to be a woman. Hmm - is that a political statement - it would be hysterical if the woman president ended up being an idiot. Happy Because if she were not an idiot everyone would claim - "oh this is not political" - if she were an idiot everyone would claim - "you can't make political statements like that on TV!" Think about it - you know I am right.
Oprah makes 260 million a year. And Simon Cowell came in a close second with 45 million. GEEZ LOUISE - what do you do with that kind of money - build a school I guess.
More big news this week is that Lindsay Lohan was caught with cocaine and pulled over for some sort of driving offense right after she left rehab. Do you get your money back? It looks like she might be going to jail. I am sure we will see this develop throughout the weekend.

*
POLITICALLY
The Democrats had their first debate and it was run by video. Meaning I think folks entered questions on YouTube and then YouTube chose the questions for them to answer. Interesting - funny I never heard about it - did you all? I would have liked to enter a question. Apparently some comments that Obama made has made a flurry. It seems though that most thought he did better.
It seems that most folks believe that Fidel Castro is not returning to power - since his bro made a speech this week that Fidel normally makes during a holiday. I am not sure, but wondering if Fidel's bro is worse than he was.????

* OTHER:
Soft drinks have been linked to some kind of heart condition - if you drink more than one a day. I am sure anything I drink except water, which I hate, is going to do something to me. Why are we not trying to find cures for diseases like Diabetes instead of studying diet coke? This kind of irritates me.
Also a "study" has come out that says obesity is linked to your friends and family. So, are they now saying a new diet is to find new friends and family. Sorry guys I am doing the "find new friends diet" see you later. I don't think that would work. I guess I can try to add a few skinny friends - but come to think of it - all my friends are skinny - HELLLOOOOO DOES IT NOT WORK THE OTHER WAY AROUND?
Starbucks is raising its prices. I think that news may effect my heart!

That is it for this week. Have a great weekend.

News Recap for Week of June 11th

_43039281_gaza_map203* INTERNATIONALLY:
Fatah and Hamas have been battling in this area for some time. Hamas, an Islamic organization, rose to prominence in Gaza during two Palestinian uprisings and refuses to recognize or negotiate with Israel. Fatah, a secular political grouping headed by Mr. Abbas, ran the Palestinian Authority until 2006 and officially recognizes Israel. This is all really hard to understand to me - which I am sure it is to everyone. But it seems that Hamas has taken control after routing Fatah rivals. Either way - it is chaos - so keep an eye on this story and as they explain it we may understand it a little better. Just remember that the one in power right now is the Islamic group.

*
HOLLYWOOD:
As we all know - Paris is back in jail. She called Barbara Walters collect - as prisoners have to do - which is kind of funny - when has she ever called collect??? She told Barbara that she wants to not be dumb anymore. The act is silly now. Interesting... I hope she can be strong enough to do that. I want to know what her sister is like - we never hear about her. She did make a comment of why the press was spending so much time on her and not the soldiers in Iraq. Canned phrase.....

Sopranos ended this week - big talk is that the ending was so vague. My brother thinks it was art. Happy The creator says he has no interest in explaining.

On Monday we will be able to see Matt Lauer interviewing the Princes of Wales - I am excited, I have never seen them talk to anyone for an extended period of time. Should be good. I wonder what they think of the Paris Hilton saga.

Angelina Jolie has a new film coming out about the news reporter that was captured and killed. It seems to be about freedom of the press. The funny thing is that she is not allowing Fox News to her Red Carpet and is making reporters fill out applications.

*
POLITICALLY
The White House immigration bill has been at a stand still but will be "worked" on some more eventually.

It seems that Hillary has made her own web page that is like the news web page - Drudge Report. The funny thing is that it is news that makes her look good. Way to go Hillary - manipulate your audience. Happy

* OTHER:
Up at the space station there is a computer problem. It seems the space station is having trouble getting power. There are 3 astronauts living there and the others visiting. It seems like it will not be a huge problem but still an issue. Here in Houston they say that NASA is working hard to fix the problem. Russia is tempted, I hear, to blame the US for "messing" up its side of the space station. It seems it is their computers that are messing up. You know when things like this happen some folks feel the need to blame others - I say just get it fixed...

That is it for this week. Have a great weekend.

News Recap for Week of April 30th

* A bill was passed this week in Florida that would make a woman seeking an abortion wait 24 hours and would make it more likely that she would see an ultrasound of the baby before undergoing the procedure. Wow - that is huge - I think it is great to see an ultrasound and not let the woman make an "emotional" response. A test has recently also come out that will allow parents to take a home test to determine the sex of their baby at 6 weeks. Wow - why can't doctors do it that early. A big group of folks are really scared because it may lead to folks having abortions. Man if you are aborting because you don't like the sex of the baby - please put it up for adoption for folks like me! You wonder how life is created - God creates it and I bet he wants that child to be a boy or a girl for a reason. It sounds like this is overseas at the moment.

* There is a lot of attention given lately to a web site that allows folks to confess their sins. You can confess and then read the transgressions of others. I can totally understand trying to get something off of your chest, just seems a bit weird to me. Who knows maybe some folks do not have the blessing of friends and family that love them no matter what. Ultimately the only one we can confess to and have it really heal us is Jesus - give it a try it is free and you don't have to type it out or worry about who will read it.

* A book was published this week that was written by the Former CIA director Tenet. It reveals some things that he had happen while in office and reveals that Al-Qaida or groups affiliated with it have undertaken several operations aimed at equaling or even surpassing the carnage of 9/11. Well all the more reason to not give them a place to grow strong and all the more reason to protect our soil!

* Rosie decided to leave The View and this week rumor has it that Roseanne Barr has emerged as the top contender for her spot. Hmmm - I am not sure what that would be like. I have never seen her in anything other than a sit com. Also the young, conservative chic on The View is pregnant. I wonder who they will replace her with if she decides to leave. Don Imus?

* There is a lady in DC who is called Miz Julia. She runs an escort service and has been charged with federal racketeering charges. (That means she is engaging in fraudulent or dishonest business dealings). Any way she is threatening to give out the names of her clients. I am not sure what this accomplishes. Sounds like she is trying to draw attention away from herself.

* This week was May Day - May 1 - and I really had no idea what that meant so I looked it up. It is apparently a day where communist countries celebrate being communist in a nut shell. Well in line with that definition Cuba was geared up for its May Day March featuring thousands and thousands of workers but Castro still too sick to attend. I was in Cuba years ago and an unnamed local told me that folks show up to these parades cause they have to - their bosses check on it. Seems like a great celebration and Castro didn't even "have" to show. May Day also included rallies on immigration. One story got a lot of attention because in CA police used rubber bullets and force to control crowds and reporters. Interesting - rubber bullets? Does that hurt? I guess I am picturing nerf type bullets. Who knows maybe I need some rubber bullets to get my husband to stop snoring. Happy

* Tony Blair has been prime minister of England for 10 years. I think his first couple of years were when Diana was killed. Anyway, he is stepping down this next month. Kind of a big deal. France is having a tight election right now. One candidate is very socialist and the other is not so much. So will be interesting. Also, a woman named Livni is desiring to become Israel's first female prime minister since Golda Meir. She is asking Olmert to resign. A big rally took place with over 100,000 people asking Olmert to resign. It seems it is all because of a Winograd Report. This is a commission that was established to investigate and draw lessons from the failures of Israel during the second Lebanon War. A report came out this month and criticized Olmert for having no "organized plan" in launching the war and called his move "misguided and rash judgement." He got some other criticism too. Lots going on politically around the world. So glad my household is a monarchy. Happy It is a nice reminder that even though politics here can be frustrating we are really better off than a lot of other places.

* The US Army has ordered soldiers to stop posting blogs or sending emails without first clearing the content with a supervised officer. I am not sure why this is - who knows maybe the officers just want to know everyone's business. Bummer really because it was nice to have a close real point of view. I guess it is similar to businesses filtering e-mails and such. I wonder what incident brought this on?

* Time Magazine came out with its list of the most influential people in the world and the weird thing is that a lot of them are folks I do not want my child listening to. I guess "influence" can be bad. But what happened to folks like Mother Teresa and can't influential folks be normal folks around the US - does it always have to be stars? They have listed Borat and Rosie O'Donnell. Seems like political move on Time's part. They also have Leonardo D'Caprio - must be because they are trying to be "green". Maybe we need to all make our own "people of influence" list - it might be pretty revealing. Happy

That is it for this week - I am off to Donut Friday with my friends. Happy

Week of April 23rd

Welcome to the FRIDAY NEWS WRAP for folks that just need a quick recap so that you can be "in the know" with what is going on around the world. A great resource for the "Competent Mom!"

News Recap for Week of April 9th

Not a lot of huge news this week so I will just touch on some interesting stories.

* The US this week is planning on trying to start "talks" with Iran on the future of Iraq. This will hopefully take place at a high level conference. This is kind of a big deal because US has not talked with Iran in a long time. And it seems that Iran might be helping insurgents in Iraq. So, curious what will become of this "talk". It is so hard to have different cultures used to living in different ways come to an agreement. Maybe we can pray for that.

* Prince Harry's troop is being sent to Iraq in days. There has been debate on whether he should go or not. He says he is not afraid to die so he is going. I am not sure how I feel about this. It seems Al-Qaida has been putting out "threats" on the British and now they are sending one of their royalty over there. Fine if Prince Harry doesn't mind dying but what about all those other boys and their families. I think he is being selfish and wanting to be "brave" but he is really putting every one else's life in danger. It is not all about him. Commanders say that if it causes more attacks on the British then they will send him home. Seems like a weird risk to take in the midst of a war.

* Back on Al-Qaeda - which I have noticed is spelled and capitalized differently every time I see it. They are in cahoots with Iran and rumor has it that they are planning the first "large scale" attack on Britain and other western targets with the support of Iran, according to a leaked intelligence report. Well there is another reason that Harry needs to stay home. Goodness. I am just so confused why all this is happening. Well that is wrong, I know what it is all happening. It all stems back to Ismeal ( I have no clue if that is spelled right) and Issac in the bible believe it or not. We live in a world of sin. It will be fun one day in heaven to sit next to some Iranian and Iraqi folks and hear their stories of how Christ revealed himself to them. Lets pray for that.

* Silly story this week - actor Sheryl Crow and a friend are going across America - or did to speak about global warming and the environment. They had a blog and one day on that blog Sheryl Crow asked folks to limit their use of toilet paper to one square. Well Rosie O'Donnel had a time with that asking if Sheryl had ever seen her bottom. I don't see how one square will work. I guess it would MAKE me wash my hands better when I leave the bathroom. I think if this would take off that toilet paper companies would end up making thicker "squares" and using the same amount of paper anyway. What did folks use before toilet paper - interesting investigation may have to take place. Not because I am for this proposal but because I am curious what Sheryl does when she goes the bathroom - makes me think of her in an "unclean" way. Happy

* Paul Wolfowitz is a big wig at World Bank - president in fact and is under investigation for promoting his girlfriend. I am not going to say anything else here.

* Congress has passed a bill that will withdraw troops out of Iraq starting Oct 1 and with a goal of complete pullout six months later. They have sent it to the president for VETO - the white-house has said it was dead on arrival. There are numerous reasons for both sides I am sure. I found a blog of a soldier's point of view that seems pretty interesting.
Soldiers Blog. I guess the question is not when will we pull troops out but when will we trust the leadership in Iraq. It can become chaos and a safe place for some bad folks. We just live in a hard time where the fighting is not for space but for life. Pray for our leaders to make good decisions and pray for our troops to be wise too.

* Former President Yelstin of Russia passed away this week. And Putin the current president has said he is not returning after his term ends. Russia is going through some changes.

* The Vatican's second highest ranking official said that abortion and euthanasia are forms of terrorism with a face. And a bomb was found this week in Austin, Texas at a place that performs abortions. I am very against abortion and I have my views on homosexual marriage but I don't think bombs are the way to fix that problem. I just remind myself that we live in a world of sin and it is my job to love folks around me and show them the love of Christ - whether I agree with their life choices or not. Christ would love them and does love them no matter what. I am not sure how that looks or what that means for these kind of issues but come on - just love folks the way Christ would. I can't imagine him leaving a bomb and I can't imagine him calling these folks terrorists. Just a thought.

* Speaking of abortion - Mexico City voted to legalize it on Tuesday. Big deal in such a Roman Catholic place. UGH.....

* The FCC is pushing to limit violence in the evenings on TV when kids would be watching TV. I wonder if violence shows are also like the sex shows that are on. I guess we can just not watch those shows with our kids - what a thought - and we can go to the bathroom and try to show them how to use one square of toilet paper. Hmmmmm......

* Divorced dad Alec Baldwin is receiving a lot of attention this week because he was caught calling his daughter and leaving a bad message about her being a thoughtless little pig. He is going to apologize on TV. Wow - good thing I do not have to apologize on TV for some of the things that come out of my mouth. Remember no one is perfect. Bad thing to say for sure - but no one is perfect. I think he is also asking for an end to his contract on 30 rock so he can focus on parenting stuff. I wish we could quit our jobs to focus on parenting stuff. Must be nice.

* Health: there is supposedly a drug that folks can take in about 3 years that will keep us from getting crippling illnesses. Interesting. There is also a few folks that are trying to pick embryos that do not hold a breast cancer gene since it has devastated their families. And there is a medicine coming out for folks that do not wipe real well with one square - HA JUST KIDING. Happy

*Lastly - Goldie Hawn is in a commercial that promotes comfort shopping in Sweden. A girl breaks up with her boyfriend and is sad and Goldie encourages her to go shop. I would love to go shop in Sweden - Happy
Well it is getting a lot of flack from politicians in Sweden. I think it would receive a lot of flack from any married man - they are all probably worried about their wives taking this to heart.

I hope you have a wonderful weekend with your family and friends.
