Spring is now coming and the weather is getting nicer and it is so fun to play outside. I have decided that this year I am going to save money and try to plant some herbs. I have tried this before and it has been complete failure but I am determined to make it work. I have a great friend that is a landscaper and has informed me that this is what to do if you live in Spring, Texas. I think the same rules would apply elsewhere but she assured me that you can always call a nursery and ask them.
Take some time to get some herbs and use them in your cooking. It makes you feel so "professional" as a mom and a housewife when you can capitalize on the spring weather and save money at the same time. Here are the tips I received:
From our friend Kristin:
It is fine to plant herbs after risks of freeze/frosts are gone - which is pretty much now. If we get a late one, you can always cover them. They do like full sun, if they are in the ground and require good drainage. They don't like to stay wet! If you plant herbs in pots here in Texas - just know that you will be watering constantly - as pots dry out alot faster, obviously. It is best that they are planted in a prepared bed of rich soil. They like good drainage - not too much not too little. Before planting, put down some fresh potting soil with a little fertilizer - organic is preferred. Planting them with plenty of space between them at least 18" apart. Basics - English Thyme, Sweet Basil, Curley Leaf Parsley, Flat leaf Parsley, Rosemary, Mint, Oregano, Dill, Lavender. All have great basic use in the kitchen as well as variety of texture, color, scent in the garden.
I know many of you have had great experiences planting herbs and fruits. Please contact us with your tips so we can all be more professional in that area and have great smelling yards!
